Social Web Design
I appear to be part of a tiny group of web designers around Huddersfield (estimated membership: 1) who is interested in organising social events and get-togethers for people in the web design industry.
Recently I've been re-entertaining the idea of organising a day/evening sometime at a cafe-bar where passionate web designers can sit down with a beer or perhaps a latte, and just chat about what we all love best: women's underwearweb design.
Anyway, it would appear I may be alone in this quest as most of the designers in this area seem to have been businessmen for such a long time that they believe these events to be no more than a disguised attempt to steal their company's secrets. Bah!
I'm going to give it a shot anyway I reckon, so if any of you - my small band of handsome and intelligent regulars - care to come up to sunny Yorkshire in the next few months for a get together then drop me an email or (in the spirit of community) leave a comment.
Likewise for any Hudd'y designers reading this... no need to be shy :)

Best of luck with that - it seems like a lot of work. And by all means, make sure to get all the members drunk and steal all their trade secrets. ;)

I don't think I can call myself a web designer as such, but I have worked on a few and will give away all my secrets for free.

@Elessar & PJ: Thanks for the kind words guys. When I become a rich, powerful man I'll buy you both flight tickets ;)
@Andrew: your email's is actually on my 'TODO' mailing list (great minds, eh? :)). I'll get around to getting some mailer out this week hopefully.

I'll be looking forward to that ticket. Actually I'd rather take a ferry...yeah, a ferry...

A ferry?!?
I'll expect you in about 2012 then... :P

I can't see myself making it over to Huddersfield, but I could email you some Guinness and Irish Stew to take care of the catering ;)

But the experience of a ferry...it would be worth it :)

Cool! so we got an American coming by Ferry, Owen's Irish Stew and Guiness for catering, a photography/womens underwear expert and a two Huddy web designers already.
And I havent even sent out the promotional email yet... :)

Sounds like an interesting bunch :P Sadly, this American can't actually come along. The American 'monetary system' hates me currently...
By the way, I'm loving this static background. Definitely glad you decided to change it :)

This isn't some big attempt to gather all the web designers of Huddersfield into one venue so that you can perform some sort of mafia style hit and eliminate all your competition in one go a la Godfather is it?
:)
Would love to attend but need a date to confirm. All the best. Janet
On 31st of October 2006 Steve Tucker said:
@Elessar: Cheers, mate. I'm glad you twisted my ankle into it! ;)
@Janet: Sadly no - my business mentor told me that mafia-style 'removal' of competition is not very good for general customer relations. Plus I seem to remember him telling me somthing to do with it being against the law... ;)
I'll be getting a date/time together soon. Soon as I do I'll let you know :)

Sounds a reasonable idea - but I'd be more interested in swapping experiences with other developers related to the issues associated with client management and finding new business rather than the "techniques" and stuff.
Put me down though and let me know when you have a date & venue.

Whatever really Jamie, its all good. There's no set discussion topics or anything, and I'd be just as happy chatting about web design as a business - client management, etc. as anything else related.
I'll be letting everyone know when a time/place is organised.
